About Dinah

Dinah Sykes is serving her second term in the Kansas State Senate and her first as Senate Democratic Leader. She was first elected in 2016 and represents parts of Lenexa, Overland Park, Shawnee, and Merriam in Johnson County. Dinah is the ranking member on the Senate Committee on Education and is the Vice-Chair on the Senate Committee on Confirmation Oversight.

Prior to her election in 2016, Dinah ran her own business as a personal chef and worked as a development officer in higher education. Dinah is active in her community and has a passion for serving others. She has served as PTA treasurer, PTA president, on the Kansas Children’s Cabinet, and is a member of the KC 2026 Board to lead the city’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup. Dinah lives in Lenexa with her husband, Jeffrey. 

In the Senate, Dinah has been a champion for public school funding, early childhood education, and protections for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and stalking. Dinah is committed to leading with courage, compassion, and common sense.
