Kansas Senate Democratic Leader Responds to Senate Republicans Blocking Bill to Protect IVF Access
Topeka, Kans. — Kansas Senate Democratic Leader Dinah Sykes released the following statement after Senate Republicans blocked Senate Bill 554, the bill to protect IVF access for Kansas families:
“Kansas women are concerned and scared that their ability to start or grow their family through IVF is going to be taken away,” Kansas Senate Democratic Leader Dinah Sykes, D-Lenexa, said. “Today we offered Kansas Republicans the opportunity to say once and for all that IVF should be protected in our state. They voted against it.”
Senator Sykes made a motion to advance Senate Bill 554, which would protect the right to access assisted reproductive technologies like IVF. The Senate voted 12-27 to block this motion. Senate Democrats voted unanimously to advance Senate Bill 554.
“Supporting Senate Bill 554 was a clear way to show Kansans that their legislature cares about women who have trouble getting pregnant,” Sykes said. “I’m disappointed my Republican colleagues blocked our efforts today, but I will never stop fighting to do the right thing and protect the right of Kansans to start or grow their family through IVF.”
