Senate Democrats Introduce Legislation to to Protect IVF Access

Topeka, Kans. — Senate Democrats are taking action to secure access to fertility care access for Kansans in the wake of the Alabama Supreme Court’s decision regarding  frozen embryos that led to the halting of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatments in the state.  Senator Cindy Holscher introduced Senate Bill 554, which would codify the right to access assisted reproductive technologies, like IVF, into law.

“For now, IVF remains safe and legal in Kansas,” Sen. Cindy Holscher, D-Overland Park, said. “But it’s hanging by a thread and Kansas Republicans are working hard to take away our rights. This bill would mark an important step in protecting the rights of families and safeguarding IVF.”

This year Kansas Republicans introduced Senate Bill 425. This legislation would lay the groundwork for fetal personhood, the very concept that led to restricting IVF access in Alabama.

“We knew that extremist Republicans would not stop at overturning Roe v. Wade, ” Senate Democratic Leader Dinah Sykes, D-Lenexa, said.“Now they’re targeting IVF, and they aren’t just going to stop in Alabama. Politicians should not be making healthcare decisions for Kansas women. Whether it’s abortion, fertility treatments like IVF, or other reproductive care, these decisions should be left to women and their doctors.”
